LDS & Associates is pleased to announce that Lorna Sikorski is one of three authors presenting a session at the Annual Speech & Hearing Convention in San Diego, CA in November 2005.
Tustin, August 10, 2005
This seminar, entitled “Integrating Culture, Language, and Accent Training in the Medical Community”, was recently accepted by the ASHA 2005 Convention Program Committee. Lynda Katz Wilner of Successfully Speaking in MD and Marjorie Feinstein Whittaker of The Whittaker Group in MA are co-presenters of this session. Location information is presented below.
Abstract in Brief: SLPs routinely develop accent programs for non-native medical professionals in United States hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and other medical venues. While accent clarity may improve, the positive impact on patient care is not always visible. These authors believe that effective accent programs must also address underlying cultural and language communication issues of both provider and recipients in the medical environment. Using breakout groups, video clips, and interactive lecture, this seminar explores specific accent parameters, cultural factors and English language fluency unique to these settings. Training agendas, communication strategies and resources are provided.
