P.O.E.C. (Proficiency in Oral English Comm.), Accent Assessment

Accent Modification Resource
I agree with Patricia Cecil-Reed that accent modification truly is “the number-one best-kept secret” for speech-language pathologists, as mentioned in Judy Kuster’s “Internet” column in the April 27 issue. I am embarking on a second career in this field and I have found it to be very challenging and rewarding. However, the article did not mention the excellent evaluation instrument by Lorna Sikorski, Proficiency in Oral English Communication (POEC). My clients expect a detailed analysis of their speech and a specific plan of instruction. This evaluation delivers the information needed to get started.”

I also wanted to say how grateful I am for your work. I love working with accent modification clients, and your evaluation makes analysis so much more efficient!

Thank you! My business has taken several interesting turns over the last few years but one thing hasn’t changed- your materials are the backbone for my accent clients.

I have been using the MEEC now with clients working on decreasing their accentedness. The program is solid, systematic, sequential and basically excellent! The CDs are helpful in that the students can hear the phoneme, or intonation pattern over and over until they are satisfied with their own production.

Highly recommend!

I used these books when I worked with clients in my speech-language pathology graduate program assistantship (MU Accent Modification Program). I loved the series as it was so user friendly with excellent visuals and examples to use with our Korean clients. The books were an amazing resource, full of easy to use practice items, even for a beginning clinician. My clients loved the visuals, especially when working on intonation. I highly suggest these!
